Cave of Swallows
Discover the most surprising abyss of Huasteca; Seventh worldwide!
The Cave of Swallows or Sótano de las Golondrinas is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating scenes of San Luis Potosí (and the entire Mexican Republic). It is an impressive natural abyss, the seventh worldwide, whose mouth is around 60 meters in diameter and its depth reaches 512 meters, with a free fall of 376 meters.
According to specialists, the origin of this natural monument is karst and it inhabits thousands of swifts, parrots and other species, which every day, at dawn, or at sunset, leave and enter the abyss circling (as if they were a big whirlwind) in a show that you will hardly forget for the rest of your life.
To get to the Sótano de las Golondrinas, in the municipality of Aquismón, we recommend you to use your own car or the service of vans that leave from the Main Square, then continue on a state road to the point where you will find 568 steps (which you must climb), which indicate the main access to the natural area. Leaving Unión of Guadalupe, you can also reach the basement on foot after a pleasant walk enjoying the landscape that identifies this region of the Huasteca Potosina.
In your visit to the Basement, we recommend you to follow these considerations:
-The visiting hours are from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
-In high season certain partial closures are made when the loading capacity of the area is covered.
– When cloudy or raining, the birds do not come out.
-In the place, rappelling is allowed, but only with the necessary permits. Ask your accredited service provider about the possibilities to perform this sport safely.
-It is possible to camp on the place, with the prior authorization of the Protection Committee in the ejido Unión de Guadalupe. Payment is per person.
-Always be accompanied with accredited local tourist guides. They are experts and know perfectly the geography of the area. In fact, they can take you to meet other basements, of smaller dimensions, to practice there the abseiling ABC in Huasteca.
Another underground wonder in the surroundings of Las Golondrinas is the caves of the Huahuas or Sótano de las Huahuas, whose depth reaches 478 meters, with two vertical shots, one of 202 meters and another of 153. There also inhabit thousands of birds of different species and you can also practice rappelling and climbing.
